It was with an acute sense of civic pride and nationalist fervour that the illustrious brothers Sir Dorab Tata and Sir Ratan Tata, remarkable scions of India’s pioneering industrialist Jamsetji Tata, bequeathed their extensive art collections to the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, now the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai. The Tata bequest formed the core of the Museum’s collection. A selection of 151 prized pieces from the Collection is presented here in ten sections – Indian Decorative Arts, Arms and Armour, Textiles, Paintings, and Manuscripts; Himalayan, Chinese, and Japanese Art; Burmese Decorative Arts; European Paintings, and European Decorative Arts – along with introductions and descriptions by specialists.

Pratapaditya Pal is the General Editor of Marg Publications. He has been associated with leading American museums holding Indian collections.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is Director of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai.
Rashmi Poddar is Associate Editor, Marg Publications and Director, Jnanapravaha, Mumbai.
